If Nicaraguan tobaccos are known for their inherently fiery characteristics, and the fifth-generation Plasencia family is known as the world's largest grower of premium Nicaraguan tobacco, what does it tell you when Plasencia Cigars sets out to craft their interpretation of a fiery Nicaraguan puro???
The cigar at hand is dubbed Plasencia Alma del Fuego, marking the third cigar in the company's popular Alma Series (which began with the Alma Fuerte and was followed by the Alma del Campo). For Alma del Fuego, the Plasencias delved into their storied tobacco vaults, selecting a core recipe primarily harvested from Nicaragua’s rustic Ometepe island. The all-Nicaraguan filler/binder is then bound in a hearty sun-grown wrapper leaf, grown on the family’s farms in the Jalapa Valley.
The end result is—not surprisingly—fiery; however, the cigar is much more than a one-dimensional punch to the palate. After a peppery burst out of the gate, Alma del Fuego shows restraint, eventually pulling back to reveal a medium-full body and complexities of earth, raw pepper, natural tobacco, aromatic cabinet spices, cocoa, and sweet roasted nuts. The Plasencias have grabbed the bull by the horns and taught it a few tricks in the process, showcasing a brilliant balance of strength and depth from start to finish.
