Leaf By Oscar Maduro
The Leaf by Oscar series may be one of the ugliest looking cigars in the humidor... at least until you get this "beast and the beauty" unwrapped. This is because creators Oscar Valladares and Jim "Island Jim" Robinson had the ingenious idea of replacing the cigar's conventional cellophane packaging with an added layer of rustic tobacco. This added leaf may not be pretty, but it protects the cigars in a more natural environment, providing added oils to the wrapper leaf while the cigar waits patiently to be smoked.
Debuting in the early 2010s, the Leaf by Oscar series has become a fan favorite, especially in craft cigar circles. There are four cigars in total, including the Leaf by Oscar Maduro, Leaf by Oscar Sumatra, Leaf by Oscar Connecticut, and Leaf by Oscar Corojo (discontinued). Each cigar consists of the same core recipe of all-Honduran binder/fillers, swapping the wrapper on each blend to offer a wide range of flavor profiles.
The Leaf by Oscar Maduro cigar is a medium to full-bodied blend, using all-Honduran tobaccos and being topped with an especially oily maduro wrapper leaf. After making sure to remove the protective cover leaf (trust us, unsuspecting hobbyists make this mistake far too often), the Leaf by Oscar Maduro springs to life from the get-go, showcasing dark and mouthwatering flavors of freshly tilled soil, oak, black pepper, molasses bread, and punchy cocoa.

Once you remove the ruddy, wrinkled outer leaf, you will find a beautiful, flawless, excellent cigar inside. Each wrapper (CT, Maduro, Sumatra and - my favorite - Corojo) imparts a different flavor to the already solid blend. Market away, Oscar. The end result warrants it.
